Career and Technical Education's Role in Dual Credit Offereings
We continue to hear about the importance of investing in education that prepares students for careers that are high wage and in demand. Today we see Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes on high school campuses becoming the norm rather the exception. However, when it comes to dual credit college course offerings, offering traditional General Education classes to prepare students for college have been a focus but not necessarily with a career in mind.

This session will show the value of including CTE courses as an option for students in addition to general education classes. Programs such as Nursing, IT, and Criminal Justice along with other traditional skill-based programs like Drafting and Welding allow students to earn college credit and help students explore possible career paths. We will share how it can work on community college campuses, on-line, and on your high school campus. CTE courses can be equally valuable to students as general education courses.

Vulnerability With and Through Curriculum
In CTE, the curriculum in our classes expands beyond simply what can be found in a textbook and includes all of the learning our students do about our subject areas, both inside and outside the classroom. Engaged Pedagogy recognizes the importance of teachers being mutually vulnerable with their students and seeing curriculum as a tool that can empower and connect students to each other and the world around them. The session will begin with an overview of mutual vulnerability and the theoretical and practical application of bell hooks' 'Engaged Pedagogy' and its connection to Family Consumer Science Education and to CTE as a whole. We will then discuss how the concept of engaged pedagogy was taught in an FCS methods course at UNL. Finally, the session will conclude with reflections from the pre-service teachers and ways in which current in-service teachers can begin to think about using engaged pedagogy in their classrooms.

Engaging Students for Success in the Real World
Attendees will be introduced to the Empowered instructional strategy of Principles + Markets = Mindset, and by implementing it, which is ingrained into all our activities, they will see increased engagement from their students as they learn to discover, develop, and apply their unique skills and cultivate a growth mindset. Students are then empowered with a decision-making framework and the market skills needed to create a win for themselves and others.

In the Empowered "Do first, talk later" approach, attendees will experience one of the Empowered activities to get a first-hand experience on how our foundational principles transform a student's interactions, how to demonstrate and model behavior in real markets that are all around us (not just monetary ones), and fostering the growth mindset, which can develop into an entrepreneurial mindset, where students are active in their behaviors for creating value in life.

Supporting Learning Variability in CTE: Technology Supports to Make it Happen!
Students who engage in Career and Technical Education learning experiences demonstrate a wide variety of backgrounds, knowledge and skills but also a wide variety of learning needs.  Two types of technologies – supportive technologies and assistive technologies – may help support students in both their CTE in-class learning experiences and their work-based learning experience.  To leverage these technologies, we need to understand each and consider frameworks that can guide the selection of and implementation of these technology supports.  In this session, participants will learn about supportive and assistive technologies and build an understanding of frameworks that can be used to meaningfully employ these technologies to empower students toward successful outcomes in CTE.

In this session, we will share the different approaches communities took to more intentionally helping students recognize, value, and build their connections and networks, then present our tools for helping communities make social capital a bigger priority.

Fielding Success: Keeping the Growth Going When the Ag Teacher's Away
The average agriculture teacher is gone from their classroom 18 days out of the year. We all can agree that while the teacher is away, the show must go on in the classroom. Through this workshop, teachers will walk away with the template and tools necessary to create a week's worth of curriculum for one class in under 30 minutes. Using a reproducible template on Google Drive cuts down preparation time significantly. While we're gone from the classroom for FFA, we deserve to focus on the contests at hand instead of answering questions back home. This workshop is recommended for teachers who use Google Classroom as their learning management system.

Come learn some tips and strategies for making SAE visits a lot less scary and a lot more enjoyable and beneficial!

As a retiring post-secondary education faculty member, I think presenting a historical perspective of how I have seen Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) grow, change, develop during the past 40 years brings a unique opportunity for the attendees. When Home Economics was not only the name of the college, but also the teaching degree there was a different mind-set about our profession. Now that we are growing, thriving, and gaining momentum, revisiting the inclusion of critical science and the original mission of FCS may help us all gain additional appreciation and passion for what and how we teach in the secondary schools.

Forestry: Not All Chainsaws and Chippers
Forestry has been a longstanding practice in the United States for hundreds of years. While the profession of forestry, particularly in timber harvest, remains a booming industry, urban forestry has been steadily gaining traction over the last 50 years. Although planting trees in cities is not a new phenomenon, the value of green infrastructure in urban areas is increasingly recognized for its contributions to aesthetics, well-being, and economic prosperity.
Urban forestry encompasses a broad range of skill sets and career paths, all centered around one significant focus: trees. In a state where a substantial number of trees populate our cities, the importance of urban forestry practices has never been more pronounced.

Reshaping Higher Education for a New Generation
The Future Is Now: Reshaping Higher Education for a New Generation of Learners

The old way of doing things in higher education is not going to cut it for future learners - and the future’s already here. How do we best serve today’s learners who have different expectations and are prepared differently than learners of the past? In this presentation, you will hear from a dean and a department chair who have been pondering this question and have come up with a few answers. They will provide a broad, college-level perspective, as well as a focused, programmatic perspective. From expanding online course offerings to creating certificates to identifying pathways, they will share examples of what has worked as well as the challenges they faced. Join them in learning how these changes can transform higher education to create more relevant opportunities for more learners than ever before.
